Frequently asked questions

What is laser therapy and how does it work?

Laser therapy is a safe, effective, and commonly used treatment, providing optimal results in areas such as the removal of unwanted hair skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, leg veins, or tattoos; and the treatment of acne.

Lasers work by delivering an intense beam of light that is absorbed by the skin. This light is converted to heat and is absorbed by the cells being targeted, while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. Candela ®lasers feature a patented skin-cooling device for even greater patient comfort and safety – and better results.

Are laser and light-based treatments safe?

Yes, laser and light-based treatments have been used for many years for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. Candela®, the most trusted name in the industry, has pioneered the development of some of the safest and most effective technologies and products available on the market today.

What will my treatment be like?

You and your practitioner will wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure. The health care professional will use a small handpiece that touches your skin to deliver the light. You may feel a light spray of coolant on your skin before each laser pulse.   Some people experience a stinging sensation.

How long will my treatment take, and how many treatments will I need?

Every treatment, like every patient, is unique. Consult your practitioner to decide what is best for you based on your needs and expectations.

What precautions should I take before or after my treatment?

In general, avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks before treatment, and again after treatment.  At Metamorphosis, we strongly urge clients to always use sunblock SPF 35 or greater at all times when exposed to the environment.  Care should be taken in the first few days following treatments to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated area with abrasive skin cleansers. Consult your practitioner for specific precautions that relate to your individualized treatment plan.

Are there any adverse side-effects to laser or light-based treatments?

In general, most procedures have a low risk of adverse side effects. Some patients experience pigment changes in the skin color. If this occurs, the skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time. All treatment results are individual.

Is my laser or light-based treatment covered by my medical insurance?

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures.  Metamorphosis does not accept insurance, but does offer financing through CareCredit®.

Botox®:

   Need Botox®?          Want Botox®?

Botox® cosmetic has been providing astounding improvements, minimizing wrinkles and furrows from repetative facial expressions.

Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Cosmetic) is a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.  As an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, existing frown lines are smoothed out and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a week.

Anticipated result of the procedure:
Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a purified therapeutic agent that removes lines and creases in the upper part of the face by inactivating specific muscles that pull on the skin. It works to eliminate the face’s dynamic wrinkles – those wrinkles that are caused not by aging or sun exposure, but by years of facial movement, such as laughing, smiling or frowning.

Treatment with Botox in the affected areas causes the underlying muscles to relax, giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Botox can remove frown lines, forehead creases and crows feet; and in some cases offer relief to patients suffering from migraines.

Procedure Description:
A simple in-office procedure, injections are targeted to the over-active muscles that are responsible for movement and expression in the problem areas.  Typically takes 10 minutes or less and the actual injections take only seconds.  The client may return to work immediately after treatment.

Temporary Side Effects:
Though it is unusual, you may experience some mild discomfort, bruising, and/or swelling at the injection site.

Duration of Results:
Generally 3 to 5 months. The effect of the Botox may take several days to develop.

Risks:
Possibility of slight swelling, bruising, or discomfort

Botulinum toxin can also be used to lessen crows' feet, bunny lines, marionette lines and smoker's lines. The treatment can be combined with implantations such as collagen or hyaluronic acid to further improve the appearance. It can also be used to shape the eyebrows into an arch or flare and to correct facial asymmetry.

You can frown as often as you like in the first day or so, but the treated areas should not be touched. Don't have a facial massage!

The effect of botulinum toxin starts wearing off within a few weeks but retreatment is not usually needed for three to six months. It can be repeated as required. Many people find after three or four treatments to glabellar lines that they don't need another one for a long time; the muscle has markedly weakened or they have broken the bad habit that led to the frowning or squinting originally.

Side effects and risks

Some people have a slight headache after treatment for several hours.  Very long lasting headaches have rarely been reported. A bruise at the site of injection is possible.

The most common significant complication, which is rare, is "ptosis". This is a drooping of the eyelid caused by the botulinum toxin tracking into the eyelid muscle. It generally lasts just a few days, but more prolonged weakness is possible. Let your provider know if this bothers you; iopidine or aproclonidine eye drops can be prescribed to lessen this effect.

Contraindications

Botulinum toxin injections should not be used in pregnancy or when breast feeding. It is also inadvisable for those with certain neurological conditions such as motor neuron disease or myasthenia gravis.

Caution is necessary for patients on the following medications:

  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics (may increase effect of botulinum toxin).
  • Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine (may reduce effect).
  • Blood thining agents eg. warfarin or aspirin (may result in bruising).

Restylane®:

Restylane® is a transparent hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into facial tissue to smooth wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is produced naturally and exists in the human body. Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane® is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.

Restylane® works by temporarily adding volume to facial tissue. Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Restylane® maintains its shape using the body's own moisture. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® is hydrophilic or "water loving." As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide lasting results.  The effect lasts for about 6 months.

Restylane® is injected into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur.  Restylane® will help smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. In a clinical study most patients needed one injection to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing; about one-third of patients needed more than one injection to get a satisfactory result. The smoothing effect lasted about six months.

Side effects of Restylane® include:

  • bruising
  • redness
  • swelling
  • pain
  • tenderness
  • itching

Restylane® should not be used in patients who have:

  • severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis (hypersensitivity to the ingestion or injection of a drug or protein),
  • multiple severe allergies,
  • severe allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins,

After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappear. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you shouldn't use Restylane®.

Chemical peels:

Chemical peels involve an application of a chemical solution to sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented, and finely wrinkled areas of the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. . The procedure is meant to diminish imperfections by peeling away the skin’s top layers.  Wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging, and hereditary factors can be reduced or even eliminated with this procedure.  Chemical peels vary according to their specific ingredients and their strength. Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. A chemical solution is applied to the skin which causes it to separate, peel off, and allows new skin to regenerate. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, and may also be more even in color.

Chemical peels have emerged as an exciting anti-aging procedure. Results of chemical peels may also be enhanced by new laser/light-based rejuvenation techniques.

Mild scarring and certain types of acne may also be treated with chemical peels. In addition, pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, blotchiness due to taking birth control pills, and skin that is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical peeling. Areas of sun-damaged skin and scaling patches may improve after chemical peeling as well. Sun block (SPF 35 or greater) must be used in conjunction with chemical peels in order to decrease the chance of the reappearance of lesions.

During a chemical peel, the health care provider applies the solution to various areas of the skin. These applications produce separation and eventually peel off layers of skin, enabling rejuvenized skin to appear.  Most patients experience a warm to hot sensation that may last about five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation.  Superficial peeling usually involves redness, followed by scaling that lasts three to five days.

It is important to avoid overexposure to the sun immediately after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to injury.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) are used for chemical peels. The precise formula used may be adjusted for each patient.

  • alphahydroxy acids (AHAs)
Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels that can often provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. AHA peels may be used to accomplish the following:
    • reduce fine wrinkling
    • treat areas of dryness
    • reduce uneven pigmentation
    • aid in control of acne
    • smooth rough, dry skin
    • improve texture of sun-damaged skin
  • trichloracetic acid (TCA)
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) can be used in many concentrations and is used to accomplish the following:
    • smooth fine surface wrinkles
    • remove superficial blemishes
    • correct pigment problems
